just starting to play guitar. What is the strumming pattern? Is it just me or it is really hard to sing and play guitar at the same time?

    • Brian Wahl Jun 15, 2012 at 2:46 am #

Posted the patterns now. And yes – it’s hard to play and sing at first. The more you practice the easier it gets.

Hey there i just wanted to say your lessons and voice are amazing! Your using your talent in Gods name. I have learned so much from watching you. I have a song request. Do you think you could do a video showing us how to play Healer by Hillsong United?

    • Brian Mar 8, 2011 at 9:46 pm #

      Hi Brett,

Thanks for stopping by, and I’m really glad to hear my tutorials have helped you out. Thanks so much for the compliments. I used to take requests, but I took the request page down. I just couldn’t keep up with them. I’ll put “Healer” on my list of songs to get to for tutorials, though.

    Hi Brian,
I’ve been playing guitar for a couple of months to expand the special music I do in church.  Your tutorials are great and this is the first real song I can play.  I’m having trouble with the vocals during the switch from Em to C on the verses.  My strumming always stops at that part then picks up again.  Do you have any pointers on which strum to start the vocals on or how to get the timing right?  Thanks!

  26. kevin Nov 15, 2012 at 7:36 pm #

    thanks for the lesson!

  27. Carlos Dec 10, 2012 at 1:22 pm #

very nice. amm the last part of the video when you sing how great thou art, the chords are G-C-D right ??

  28. Alma Jan 11, 2013 at 5:00 pm #

Wow Brian…you play and sing awesome! I just wanted to thank you for taking the time and uploading these tutorials. Thanks to your tutorials I have learned how to play a few songs. God bless you. You just don’t know how much this helps us beginners- who really want to learn guitar to praise the Lord. Thanks again and God bless you.

  29. Ching Feb 8, 2013 at 11:50 pm #

I noticed that you use the D_ UDUD_ UDUD_ DU … quite often. I don’t have trouble strumming this pattern per se, but I do have trouble matching it to the 4/4 rhythm. This means I can’t sing while I play. Do you have any tips on how the D’s and U’s line up with the 4 beats in the measure?

    • Ching Feb 9, 2013 at 10:19 am #

Never mind, I figured it out. Beat 1 is D_ _U, Beat 2 is DUD_, Beat 3 is _UDU, and Beat 4 is D_DU, with each letter or space representing a quarter of a beat. Now off to practice… Thanks!

  30. David Mar 13, 2013 at 5:35 am #

    Hey Brian,
Thank for the video, it is really good and I have been practicing hard what you have taught. I have been playing for about a year now, so I am still a beginner and do not yet have a good ear for strum patterns and timing. I can play proficiently with you the intro, and after lots of practice I can play D_ UDUD_ UDUD_ DU without a problem, but I have the same problem as Ching, I cannot match the 4/4 timing with the strumming pattern, and am stuck. I saw Ching’s subsequent post, but I cannot quite get what he is saying since I am still new. Could you please explain more clearly the strumming pattern/timing of the verses/chorus, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!!
