The Veil is a two in one overdrive/boost pedal. The overdrive is Will Sledge’s 919 drive, which is his take on the classic 808 Tube Screamer. The Boost is his Up Boost. Both can be engaged independently, and you can toggle the order of the effects as well.
Everything about this pedal is awesome. From the looks to the build quality, and finally the tone – this is truly a boutique and high-end pedal. Will builds these by hand, and his work is nothing short of beautiful – both inside and outside. Check out Will’s site above and you can see the guts of some of his builds – he is passionate about quality.
The Veil sounds great. The drive from the 919 retains that smooth character from the 808 circuit, but in my ears it seems to be more pristine with greater definition and clarity. It is very versatile as well, and useable throughout the entire sweep of the gain and tone knobs.
The Up boost provides a ton of output. You can use it to give you just a bit of a bump, or you can just slam the front end of your amp with it. It also seems to give your tone a bit of fullness that sounds really great.
Another thing we really love about The Veil is how responsive it is. If you vary your pick attack, you can really get it to clean up or drive, especially with a great tube amp.
For this demo, we used the follwing gear:
- Telecaster style guitar with Tonerider Hot Classic pickups
- Agape Tribute 18 watt head amp (check this thing out – it is awesome – click the link for the review)
- Greer Amps Fish Press (compressor)
- Eventide TimeFactor and Space (for reverb and delay)
We also feel that Bryce’s manly beard contributed to the great tones he was getting 🙂
Hi! Love this demo. I have watched it tons of times waiting for the day when I could get one. I think it will sound great with my amp (Bad Cat Cougar 5) but, at church, I use a Digitech RP360XP multi effects processor for all my tones (Vox AC30 amp model). I really like it but the overdrives are decent at best. I was wondering if you guys think that they would work well together or should I just try it on my own and see? Just unsure of using a REAL pedal with modeling software. Thanks!
Hey Trevor – you mean using a pedal like The Veil in front of your Digitech? It probably will sound a lot better than the drive sounds in the digitech for sure (I’ve done that before with a Line 6 POD).
