TONE MATCH Gen2 PATCHES, CAPTURES, AND PROFILES OF A DR. Z Z-80

For these patches, we’ve captured a Dr. Z Z-80 amplifier. The result is a set of presets and captures that sound exactly like our amp, and the microphones, preamps, and EQ chains that we use to record it.

The Z-80 is, simply put, one of the very best Vox AC-style amplifiers we’ve ever heard. It’s based on the very rare Vox AC-80, and amp that was originally designed for the Beatles. The vintage AC-80’s are magical, but notoriously unreliable and prone to breaking. The Z-80 is Dr. Z’s homage to this legendary amp, and you almost have to play it just to believe how good it sounds.

We’ve captured and tone-matched the amp various cabs (more on that below), mic’d with a Royer 121 and Sennheiser MD421 through API preamps and EQ.

TONE MATCH (Gen 2) PATCHES (Applies to Line 6 and Fractal presets)

These are part of our ‘Tone Match’ line of patches. To create these patches, we make custom IR’s that ‘match’ the HX and Fractal amp models to our real-world amp. The result is the Line 6 and Fractal units sound almost exactly like our actual amplifiers.

The ‘Gen2’ indicates a new process we’ve used when Tone Matching our amplifiers that takes more of the amplifier’s cab and speaker into account, resulting in a more accurate tone match impulse response.

FOUR CAB OPTIONS

With this amp, we wanted to offer you the experience of playing through various different cabinets, as each cab brings out unique qualities of the amplifier. Scroll down to learn more about the four different cabs we Tone Matched and captured this amp through.

CAB DETAILS

  • For capture units (TONEX, Quad Cortex, and Kemper), you’ll get separate captures through each cab, as well as direct captures.
  • For modeling units (Line 6 and Fractal), you’ll get separate Tone-Matched IR files which you can swap into the cab block(s) to switch cabs

The Z-80 is an open back 2×12 cab loaded with Celestion Alnico Golds. This is the standard cab that Dr. Z pairs with the Z-80, and it offers the most ‘Vox AC’ type tone. Fans of this type of amp will immediately recognize the chime and punchy bottom end that this cab offers.

This classic Marshall 4×12 is loaded with the original Celestion ‘Blackback’ speakers. These are highly sought after for their very clear and articulate, yet full and rich tone.

The Z-80 paired with this cab sounds huge. Crank the gain on the amp through this IR and you’ll get more familiar hard rock tones. 

The Marshall 1982B is the oversized 4×12 that shipped with the Hendrix ‘Super 100’ amplifier. It’s loaded with UK-made Celestion G12C’s

This cab sounds more ‘vintage’ than the other Marshall 4×12. It’s warmer across the EQ spectrum. If you find the amp a bit bright with the other cab options, this might be just what you’re looking for. We love to pair this cab with many other amps – it always delivers.

This Mojotone 2×12 cab is loaded with a pair of WGS speakers – a Veteran 30 and an ET65. These speakers pair well together and offer a distinct midrange punch.

Through this cab, the Z-80 has a more pronounced midrange response, in a slightly different spot on the EQ spectrum from the Z-80 cab.

This download includes patches for Helix, HX Stomp, and POD Go.

  • Z-EIGHTY A/B SC – These presets are designed for guitars with single coils
  • Z-EIGHTY A/B HB– These presets are designed for guitars with humbuckers
  • NOTE: The HX Stomp and POD Go folders include ‘FX” patches. These patches include the additional effects blocks from the full Helix patch.

A PRESETS: The ‘A’’ presets feature two amp blocks set up in a stereo pair with all the wet effects feeding into the amps. Think of it like running a large stereo pedalboard into two amplifiers set on the ‘edge of breakup’.

‘B’ PRESETS: In the ‘B’ presets, the modulation, delay, and reverb effects are placed after the single (mono) amplifier block. This replicates a  studio setting where all the modulation, delay, and reverb effects are applied after the amplifier. We’ve also set a button to increase the gain on the amp block, giving you a pure amp-like gain sound.

The POD Go presets only include one set of presets, because you cannot use two amp blocks in a single preset.

TONEX AMP CAPTURE PRESETS – Compatible with the Tonex/Amplitube Software and the TONEX pedals

The profiles increase through the entire gain range of the amp.We’ve delivered 20 total profiles: four profiles with each cab, and a set of four direct profiles.

The Tone Model presets are numbered, and the number corresponds to the level of gain in the tone model. Lower numbers equal lower gain, and higher numbers equal higher gain. Typically a ‘2’ or ‘3’ is the ‘edge of breakup’, and is the perfect option to use with pedals.

QUAD CORTEX CAPTURES

The captures increase through the entire gain range of the amp. We’ve delivered 20 total captures: four captures through each cab, plus four direct captures.

The captures are numbered, and the number corresponds to the level of gain in the tone model. Lower numbers equal lower gain, and higher numbers equal higher gain. Typically a ‘2’ or ‘3’ is the ‘edge of breakup’, and is the perfect option to use with pedals.

HOW DO YOU GET THE CAPTURES?

When you place your order, we will need to manually send you the captures through the ‘Cortex Cloud’ app by Neural DSP, available for both iOS and Android devices. First, you need to have the app installed and you must have an account through the app (go here to create an account and access the app).

This is how we will send you the captures:

  1. Please include your Cortex Cloud app username in the ‘Notes’ field when checking out. If you do not include this, we cannot send you the captures. After we receive your order, we (WorshipTutorials) will follow you on the app.
  2. Follow ‘WorshipTutorials’ on the Cortex Cloud app. This will make us ‘friends’ through the app :). If you are not following us, we cannot send you the captures.
  3. After we receive your order, and we ‘Friends’ on the app, we will send you the captures through the app. We bundle the captures into presets, so you will receive one (or more) presets that include all the captures. You will find the captures in the ‘Shared with me’ section on your Quad Cortex.
  4. Please allow up to 5 business days for us to send you the captures. Most orders will be fulfilled within two business days or less. This fulfillment process must happen manually – we will do our best to get you the files quickly. Once the NDSP marketplace opens, this process may change.

PRESETS

The pack includes 2 sets of presets (each with SC and HB options) for Axe-FX III, FM3, and FM9.. The presets are labeled ‘A’ and ‘B’, and feature different approaches to signal chain and amp channels.

  • Z-EIGHTY A/B SC – These presets are designed for guitars with single coils
  • Z-EIGHTY A/B HB– These presets are designed for guitars with humbuckers

NOTE: The FM3 folder includes an ‘FX” patch. This patch includes the additional effects blocks from the full Axe-FX and FM9 patches. Feel free to substitute any of these effects blocks into the main patch to suite your needs. FM3 only includes one set of presets because the unit cannot run dual amp blocks.

Higher numbers = more gain. The ‘2’ and ‘3’ captures represent the ‘edge of breakup’ on the amp, which we prefer as a pedal platform.
