Brian,
I love you style and playing. However, I have taught voice and you seem to be trying to force a “style” of singing from your throat and out of your mouth, and it comes out as a more nasal tone. Don’t be afraid to open your throat and mouth and sing. I think you have a great voice hidden in there! Try this little exercise. First, sing a short phrase that sounds nasal…record it, if possible. Then, sing it again while holding your nose. It will sound a little strange, but I think you will get the feeling of singing out through your diaphragm. Another good exercise is, and again may sound strange, but it does work. Sing that same phrase, only this time pretend you are pulling a string out of your mouth and up toward your forehead as you sing it, like pulling a string on a toy. To do this, place your thumb and forefinger together as pinching a string. Visualize this “pinch” as a focal point for the sound. While singing the phrase, pull your fingers out and up from your mouth in a slow, smooth action, timed so that by the end of the phrase, your arm is 90% extended and your hand is at forehead level.
God bless you are you minister in music!
