Good Good Father is an enormously popular song right now, originally written and performed by the band Housefires. Chris Tomlin’s version is extremely accessible for churches and worship teams. It’s in 6/8 time and on the album it’s in the key of A. For our resources, we’ve done the song with a capo on the 2nd fret using key of G chords.

Thank you for sharing your version!!
The arrangement on this post may be wrong 😉
Love what you guys do.
Hi Andy – thanks! The arrangement I did here should follow the Chris Tomlin version.
I think he means it says:
Album: Hillsong Worship – Open Heaven / River Wild
•Tempo: 72.5 bpm, 4/4 time
•Album Key: C (male – high)
Great job on this tutorial and all of your tutorials!
Ah – now I see what you mean :). I fixed it – thanks!
Brian,
I’m watching you teach the chords for Good Good Father and yet the G chord you are showing in the chart isn’t what you are playing. You never reach your index finger up to the low E string when playing the G. Are you playing a variation on the G chord because if I don’t reach up for the low E the G chord doesn’t sound right. Am I missing something? I’m not a great guitar player and am struggling with the transition between the G and the Gsus chord so any shortcuts would be helpful. Thanks again for providing these tutorials, without them I’d never be able to attempt some of our worship songs.
Hi Brian – sometimes I’ll play a slightly different variation than the diagrams in the videos, but I keep those diagrams as they are because they will always sound good on the song. I don’t think I ever used my index finger on the low E string during the G on this one – I do reach up and use it on the B string when I walk down between the G and Gsus.
In regards to Brian’s point on your alternate fingering — you didn’t really say what you do with your index finger on the G chord. It’s obvious you are not fingering the A string as indicated in the G chord. Are you muting the A string with your thumb? Something has to be done with the A string on that G chord.
In the video I’m pretty sure he’s muting the A string with his middle finger while also playing with it on the low E string. That’s what I do and it sounds the same.
Yep – thanks Luke!
Hi Joe! Typically on that I mute the A string with the flesh of my 2nd finger that is fretting the low E – just let the finger touch the A string as well and it will be muted.
Hi brian I just wanted to say that I’m a big fan of yours. I’m 16 years old, would love to sing with you
🙂
Thanks! You can sing along with me in all the videos 🙂
Hey Brian,
Have you ever noticed in the song, that He isn’t just a good Father, He’s a good, good Father. I love this verse because it reminds me that we are not alone.
I am just blessed that I get to hear this guy every Sunday. Love you Brian and all that you do.
Awww – thanks Brian 🙂
Hi Brian. I just learn from your video OUR GOD last week. And I practice following how you and Al play the song on youtube. And I used the song in leading our Sunday service. And my Pastor loved it and she had me play it again. You guys are my new discovery. Thanks so much. Praise God I found your WT video.
Thanks great – thanks Ken!
Love it Brian,
Get all emotional every time I hear it.Having a few problems singing and playing at the same time what do you suggest?
Hey Mick! You mean if you get emotional playing the song and singing it? It happens from time to time. I’ve found that those moments arise when God is doing something in your spirit while playing or leading, and letting that emotion show is typically a good thing, especially if you’re leading people.
Very nicely done, Brian. Your work is appreciated and a blessing. Peace,
Thank you Michael
Hey Brian,
My name is Dustin Hammers and I’m from Southern Illinois. I am currently in “training” to be a worship leader. I’ve seen several of your WT’s on YouTube and I can’t tell you what a blessing you have been to me words just won’t do it. May God bless you and yours. Thank you for using your gifts just as Jesus would to help others. Keep on keeping on brother
Thanks so much, Dustin!
I’m a 47 year old wife and mother of 9 who has helped lead worship with my husband for years. I’ve never learned the guitar or wanted to until now and you are helping so much! Thank you for all you are doing on here! I love the songs and the chord diagrams are so helpful while you are singing and playing a song. I’m catching on quite well. Thanks again for advancing the kingdom with your talents. May the Lord return it back to you many times over.
Christy,
I waited until I was 50 before picking up the guitar, from one beginner to another: welcome!
Secondly, you’ve stumbled onto a great site and a solid teacher in Brian. I was about to quit guitar after a year of struggling when I stumbled upon this site, Brian’s teaching style and tutorials were like a life jacket that kept my guitar learning afloat and helped me break thru the intitial learning curve. And now four years on, I still come back here…sometimes even as refreshers for songs I learned 4 years ago.
Thanks so much!
Thanks Christy! Mother of 9! Wow :). I’m not sure when you’ll read this, but tomorrow is Mother’s Day as I’m writing this comment, so happy Mother’s Day!
hi Brian,
Thanks for the video. I am a beginner guitar player. May i know what strum pattern you are using?
Hi Tony – if you navigate over to the tutorial for this song, I explain the strumming pattern there. Thanks!
Hey Brian I been practicing and I can’t get the gsus correct is there another chord that is is and simple to it
Hi Eric – you can just play a regular G there if you want.
Hey, I was wondering playing this in A seems quite high. Any idea what key might be best for a congregation?
Ps thank you for all your tutorials you’ve taught me guitar and I now lead worship at our church.
Hey Matthew if playing in A feels high I’d recommend just trying it in G.
Hi Brian, would you be able to provide the chords for this song for a female voice? Thanks! ps. please make it easy since i’m a beginner, :))
Hi Cristina,
Key of D or C would be well suited for a female lead – they are included in the chord chart kit. Thanks!
I loved being able to play along with your video! I’m a worship leader that has played guitar for years, but I just know the basics. I loved getting to “jam” with you! Who knows… maybe I’ll work up the courage to bring my guitar to rehearsal one night and play this song for the worship team! I don’t have a capo here, but I think chording a little further up on the neck will actually help me! Thanks so much for your ministry!
Thanks Sue! Bring that guitar to rehearsal!
Hi Brian, Mother of six here. So grateful for your help. Love leading our homeschool group in worship. Love this song. Wondering if you have an idea why I have trouble singing and playing the chorus and any suggestions to overcome the trouble. When I get to the chorus, I lose the strumming while singing. I’m more of a singer than a guitarist and tend to strum to the melody somehow instead of keeping to the rhythm consistently. So when we get “Its who you are, its who you are..” I think I change chords too early and get the strumming all mixed up. What do you think? My daughter who plays keyboard says my timing is off. It’s on the chorus, though…
Hi Beth,
One of the more difficult things to do when you’re learning songs is to get the rhythm of the music and the lyrics in sync, especially when they seem to be opposed to one another. My suggestion is always to learn the song so well that you don’t really have to think of how to play it, and then do the same with the lyrics. It’s really a matter of memorization. Good luck!
PS. Thank you for the Christmas music!
Welcome 🙂
So I got the chord chart you have for this song, however you don’t have chord diagrams with it so I can know how to play them, do you have that somewhere else where I can learn?
Hi Matthew – we have lessons on all the chords in all the typical keys used for guitar in the guitar lessons section. Also the videos themselves have chord diagrams in them. Thanks!
Wait I can’t find the strumming pattern
Hi Kristen – you can use the typical 6/8 strumming pattern – D UDUD UDUD UDUD UDU,…
